Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts. Used with care they are a simple way to scent your home. This guide covers the basics we follow for every Wild Lore oil.
For aromatic and external use only
Do not swallow essential oils, and never add an essential oil to food or drinks. Our essential oils are not food flavorings. For cooking and baking, use our flavoring extracts.
Diffusing
- Follow your diffuser maker’s instructions; a few drops per fill is usually enough.
- Diffuse in a ventilated room and take breaks rather than running a diffuser all day.
- Keep pets able to leave the room. Some oils are not suitable around cats, dogs or birds, so check with your vet.
Diluting before skin use
- Never apply an essential oil undiluted (“neat”) to skin. Mix it into a carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond or fractionated coconut oil.
- Many aromatherapy references suggest about 1–2% for everyday adult use: roughly 6–12 drops of essential oil per 30 ml (1 fl oz) of carrier oil. Use less on the face and for sensitive skin.
- Some oils are best kept off skin altogether. We recommend cinnamon for diffusers and home fragrance only.
Patch test first
Before using a new blend, apply a small amount of the diluted oil to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours. Stop using it if you notice redness, itching or discomfort.
Citrus oils and sunlight
Some cold-pressed citrus oils, such as lemon, sweet orange and bergamot (unless labeled bergapten-free), can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid sun or tanning beds on skin where they were applied for 12 hours.
Who should take extra care
- Keep all essential oils out of reach of children and pets.
- Keep peppermint and eucalyptus away from the faces of infants and young children.
- Ask a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition (including asthma or epilepsy), or take medication.
Storage
Store bottles tightly closed, upright and away from heat, flames and direct sunlight. Essential oils are flammable. Keep them away from eyes; if oil gets in your eyes, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
